My 5 year old and I were playing around on YouTube when we found this recipe for making ice cream in a bag. We tried it out and it was super easy and super fun and super tasty.
My son loved being able to do most of it by himself and it even turned into a good lesson on measuring and light chemistry.

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 cup milk or half & half
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
6 tablespoons rock salt
1 pint-size Ziploc plastic bag
1 gallon-size Ziploc plastic bag
Ice cubes
Instructions:
Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.
Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt. .
Place the small bag inside the large one and seal the large bag.
Shake until mixture is ice cream, about 5 minutes.
Wipe off top of small bag, then open carefully and enjoy!
My variation:
I think I'm allergic to milk (it's been disagreeing with my tummy lately) so I made one bag using a can of coconut milk and omitting the vanilla. It was delicious! I think next time I'll try adding a little bit of cocoa powder or hot chocolate mix to the coconut milk. Yum!
If anyone tries this with soy milk or something different I'd love to know how it turns out.

I used this recipe years ago when I was an aid at a preschool. It was really fun and yummy. Adding chocolate is a great idea -- also the cocoanut milk sounds good. I'll be trying this again soon!
Yay for fun, fast and easy ice cream!! Adam and I have wandered around the kitchen almost every night for the past month asking each other, "Where'd you put the ice cream again?"...knowing, of course, that we haven't bought any. But we did have these ingredients. So, my version: Mix milk and "Toddy" (like Nesquick, but with more vitamins). We don't have ziplock bags, so we improvised with another bag and an empty tin can for the ice/salt mixture. The result was very yummy.
I refroze the ice/salt mixture to use again, putting a cup of regular water in the center so the icy salt would freeze around it letting me pull the cup out next time and reuse my precious salt.
